UNLV: Trendsetters in the wrong way?

UNLV quarterback, Matthew Sluka, made national waves for this play the first three games of the season, but yesterday he made ways with the announcement he was leaving the team due to misrepresentations from the university.  All signs point towards a NIL dispute between the player and the collective at UNLV.  With only playing three games on the season, this allows Sluka to keep his redshirt year and transfer using his fifth year of playing eligibility next season.

Will others who feel their NIL commitments are not being met by their universities’ collectives follow suit?  Will this become the trend for athletes to get all their money up front, a scenario I do not see happening, with the Kadyn Proctor situation between Iowa and Alabama being the reason.  Collectives must protect themselves from paying 100% up front, but what situation works for all?

My opinion would look like the following:

  • 20% day 1 of the semester
  • 20% first competition
  • 20% after first semester grades are posted
  • 40% day after the transfer portal closes and player still enrolled at the school/university
